You Will Get More Spam Emails If Your Email Starts From ‘A’, ‘M’, ‘S’, ‘R’, ‘P’ Instead of ‘Q’, ‘W’, ‘Y’, ‘Z’ Which Gets Less Spam

Well, the title might look weird initially but after some thought you will agree that emails that start with more obvious alphabets should get more spam then those email that begin with less obvious ones.

Dr Richard Clayton, computer scientist in University of Cambridge, analyzed over 500 million junk spam emails to come to the above conclusion. In a nutshell, his study concludes that emails that begin with more obvious alphabets like ‘A’, ‘M’, ‘S’, ‘R’, ‘P’ will get double the spam when compared to emails that begin with alphabets like ‘Q’, ‘W’, ‘Y’, ‘Z’.

One reason pointed by Dr. Clayton was the bruteforce method which spammers use to generate live emails. Like, if a spammer knows that abc@xvz.com is a live email then he will try abc@pqr.com to check if this is also live. Hence it is obvious that spammers will apply this method on more general email as they have higher chances to be available over different domains.

Another reason which I can sight for such variation in email spam is the availability of emails with so called obvious letters. Like, mostly people tend to create emails which start with above mentioned letters instead of the less known letters ‘X’, ‘Y’, ‘Z’. We all know that ‘S’ is the most frequently used letter for name of various humans as compared to ‘Z’. Hence, because their are more live emails that start with obvious letters so they are bound to receive more spam as they will be attacked by spammers more than those emails that start with unobvious letters.

CompuWorld Received SiteLinks For Categories Which No More Exist!

Well, webmasters strive for Google SiteLinks for their websites and here I am who received SiteLinks for this blog but unfortunately I had to block those! Recently I changed the category structure of this blog (for my ease) after I had upgraded from a real old version of wordpress to the latest version. I was very excited with the fresh looking wordpress dashboard and the new category structure which I always dreamt of but had no guts to apply considering the size of this blog.

Today, out of the blue I searched for keyword ‘nofullstop’ in Google and what I saw first excited me and after a second killed all the excitement.

What I saw can be seen above. I had received 5 SiteLinks for various categories of my blog which now don’t exist. I am beating myself for changing the category structure. I had to block all the 5 SiteLinks using Google Webmasters so that people don’t stumble on pages which don’t exist but it was a hard decision.

I wish I could replace those links with the latest category links :(

Convert All MS Office Files To MS Office 2007 Format In One Go

You have been using since ages and now you have loads of documents (word, powerpoint, excel) in your computer which are in the older format (something other then 2007) then you must have faced compatibility problems while opening those documents in Office 2007. Although many times documents will open up but the formatting will be broken.

In such cases either you can convert each document to 2007 format manually or use some software and save your precious time. Well, I am sure you won’t need instructions if you plan to convert them manually so here I will prefer to talk about Migration Manager which can be used to convert all your older documents to the latest 2007 format.

Firstly, download and install the Migration Manager in your system.

Then open the directory [path] \ tools (where path is that directory path where you have installed Migration Manager). Now open ofc.ini in notepad and add this line to the file.

fldr=[path where your older documents are stored]

Open Command Prompt and go to [path]\tools (where [path] is that directory path where you have installed Migration Manager). Now run the application ofc.exe which you will find in the tools directory.

All the files will be converted to the latest 2007 format and saved to a new folder. Remember that files which you have password protected won’t be converted with this method.

Using this utility you can convert:

  • doc to docx
  • xls to xlsx
  • ppt to pptx
